Fish Tales

Dr. Kakala Gopalakrishnan, professor, CC, Oceanography, is one of the world authorities on krill, a shrimp-like animal that whales feed on. His community services include consultation to local fish farmers and coordination of the Marine Option Program of the University of Hawaii. Popular classes in oceanography, marine biology, and environmental science are part of his course offerings. A newly-constructed "wet-lab" provides an opportunity for experimental learning; on-site field trips to Coconut Island in Kaneohe Bay and the Waikiki Aquarium enhance the learning process. He developed the first aquaculture technology course at HCC with an outdoor facility to grow aquatic plants, golden talapia, and prwns utilizing alternate energy sources.
