SP 251 - Principles of Effective Speaking

Course Description

  • Prerequisite: SP 151 OR "C" or higher in ENG 100

Designed to help students prepare and present speeches; the steps necessary and the rhetorical theory behind public speaking.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of SP 251, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to gather information from libraries, media and community resources.
  • Demonstrate the ability to organize ideas.
  • Demonstrate the ability to speak before a group.
  • Demonstrate awareness of audience characteristics.
  • Demonstrate appreciation of the qualities of a good speaker.
  • Demonstrate an ability to undertake rhetorical criticism.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the role of non-verbal communication and language in public speaking.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the rhetorical tradition of public speaking.
