ICS 102 - Introduction to Internet Resources
Course Description
- Prerequisite: Any one of the following: ICS 100, 100E, 100M, 100T, 101
- Some sections may be for CENT majors only
This course introduces the many resources available on the Internet. Topics will include history, current issues and how the Internet works. Terminology, file formats, and naming conventions will be covered. Students will be introduced to the concept of client-server programs as they apply to the Internet. Special emphasis will be placed on the World Wide Web, where students will learn to browse and publish information. Formerly cross-listed with CENT 102. Credit may be received for only ICS 102 or for CENT 102, but not for both.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of ICS/CENT 102, the student will be able to:
- Use proper terminology to define the Internet and explain how it works.
- Identify key benchmarks in the history of the Internet and World Wide Web.
- Discuss network security problems and protection against viruses.
- Use File Transfer Protocol to upload and download files via the Internet.
- Connect to remote servers using Telnet.
- Manage various e-mail systems.
- Use various browsers and make setting changes.
- Use various search engines to locate research information.
- Create a Web site on a local or remote server.
- Create Web pages by writing HTML code with a simple text editor.
- Insert hyperlinks and various image and sound formats into a Web page.
- Change Web page backgrounds and colors.
- Manage Web page files and folders including the assignment of permission codes.
