ICS 227 - Networking with TCP/IP
Course Description
- Prerequisite: CENT 140
- CENT majors only
A course that covers the essentials of networking computers using the TCP/IP protocol. The UNIX operating system will be used as the primary example of networking, although interoperability with other operating systems will be covered. Cross-listed as CENT 227. Credit may be received for only ICS 227 or for CENT 227 but not for both.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of ICS/CENT 227, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the history of the TCP/IP protocol.
- Describe the ISO/OSI protocol stack layers.
- Explain the relationship of the TCP/IP protocol to the stack.
- Describe the various services in the TCP/IP protocol suite.
- Discuss the physical media used for network connections.
- Explain the relationship between TCP/IP and Ethernet.
- Describe the Internet Domain name system and the role of the InterNIC.
- Describe the Internet address format.
- Differentiate among class A, B, and C IP networks.
- Explain the relationship of these networks to the subnet mask.
- Explain the IP protocol.
- Describe Remote Procedure Calls, Network File System, and Domain Name System.
- Describe the use of network analyzers and tools.
- Justify the need for using a network management system.
