ICS 227 - Networking with TCP/IP

Course Description

  • Prerequisite: CENT 140
  • CENT majors only

A course that covers the essentials of networking computers using the TCP/IP protocol. The UNIX operating system will be used as the primary example of networking, although interoperability with other operating systems will be covered. Cross-listed as CENT 227. Credit may be received for only ICS 227 or for CENT 227 but not for both.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of ICS/CENT 227, the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the history of the TCP/IP protocol.
  • Describe the ISO/OSI protocol stack layers.
  • Explain the relationship of the TCP/IP protocol to the stack.
  • Describe the various services in the TCP/IP protocol suite.
  • Discuss the physical media used for network connections.
  • Explain the relationship between TCP/IP and Ethernet.
  • Describe the Internet Domain name system and the role of the InterNIC.
  • Describe the Internet address format.
  • Differentiate among class A, B, and C IP networks.
  • Explain the relationship of these networks to the subnet mask.
  • Explain the IP protocol.
  • Describe Remote Procedure Calls, Network File System, and Domain Name System.
  • Describe the use of network analyzers and tools.
  • Justify the need for using a network management system.
