ENG 102 - College Reading Skills
Course Description
- Prerequisite: "C" or higher in ENG 21/51 OR placement in ENG 100
Improvement in college and adult level reading with emphasis on increasing reading rate and comprehension through techniques of phrase reading, skimming, and vocabulary development.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of ENG 102, the student will be able to:
- Expand his or her eye span and reduce focus time through tachistoscopic and word recognition exercises.
- Increase rate of perception through word, phrase, and sentence meaning exercises.
- Recognize key ideas through sentence meaning and idea reading exercises.
- Organize main ideas and supporting details through exploratory reading exercises.
- Summarize complex organization through longer exploratory and study reading exercises.
- Evaluate the validity of reading material through critical thinking exercises.
- Increase flexibility of rate according to content and individual purpose for each of the above through the exercises and through mechanical pacing.
