ENG 120 - Advanced Technical Writing
Course Description
- Prerequisite: "C" or higher in ENG 22/60 OR placement in ENG 100
Practice in representative forms of technical writing: proposals, progress reports, letters, memos, resumes. Collaborative research with technical instructors in the student’s field. Identification of audience, correct use of language, and appropriate use of visuals will also be stressed, with emphasis on computer and library skills.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of ENG 120, the student will be able to:
- Follow directions accurately
- Meet required deadlines
- Understand the need and circumstances for concise and for precise technical writing
- Think logically, plan, organize, and write reports at an appropriate level of technicality
- Research and be able to read and assess technical information for specific assignments
- Apply technical writing skills to specified projects from trade/technical courses taken concurrently with ENG 60, or in the future
- Demonstrate computer literacy
- Send and receive memos bye-mail
- Recognize the importance of standard English for both written and oral reports
- Determine audience and address that audience
- Complete the first four (4) assignments for ENG 60
- Compose appropriate business letters/memos for particular situations
- Research and write a five to seven-page report, with three outside sources, connected to his/her major
