ENG 21 - Developmental Reading
Course Description
- Prerequisite: ENG 20B & C & D & E OR "C" or higher in ESL 11 & 13 & 14 & 17 OR placement in ENG 21/51
Designed to develop reading skills needed for college level reading. Emphasis is on vocabulary and comprehension of expository reading material. Study skills needed for effective reading are handled.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of ENG 21, the student will be able to:
- Identify the topic
- Recognize stated and implied main ideas
- Recognize the structure and organization of paragraphs
- Discriminate between major and minor supporting details
- Locate specific information
- Think more critically about what is read
- Make inferences
- Draw conclusions and predict outcomes
- Differentiate between fact and opinion
- Demonstrate knowledge of college-level vocabulary
- Use context to determine meaning of unknown words
- Interpret charts, maps, diagrams
- Adapt reading rate and method of reading
