ENG 21 - Developmental Reading

  • Prerequisite: ENG 20B & C & D & E OR "C" or higher in ESL 11 & 13 & 14 & 17 OR placement in ENG 21/51

Designed to develop reading skills needed for college level reading. Emphasis is on vocabulary and comprehension of expository reading material. Study skills needed for effective reading are handled.

Contact: 3 hours lecture per week

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of ENG 21, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize stated and implied main ideas
  • Recognize the structure and organization of paragraphs
  • Discriminate between major and minor supporting details
  • Locate specific information
  • Think more critically about what is read
  • Make inferences
  • Draw conclusions and predict outcomes
  • Differentiate between fact and opinion
  • Demonstrate knowledge of college-level vocabulary
  • Use context to determine meaning of unknown words
  • Interpret charts, maps, diagrams
  • Adapt reading rate and method of reading
