ESL 1 - College Listening/Speaking Skills
- Prerequisite: ICE 6 OR placement in ESL 1
- Corequisite: ESL 3 & 4 & 7
This is the first-level listening/speaking course that is required of all students. It will include the teaching and practice of listening/speaking skills that students will need in academic and workplace settings.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of ESL 1, the student will be able to:
- Comfortably use basic conversational styles, forms, and sounds of English.
- Make and respond to requests and follow and give directions.
- Initiate and sustain a general conversation in most social situations in a range of circumstances.
- Speak about general differences between American culture and other cultures.
- Understand news stories and conversations about current, past, and future events.
- Comprehend lectures on a range of academic and technical subjects.
- Organize and present a short talk on a simple process, that is, how to do something.
- Work in groups, sharing and reporting information.
