ESL 3 - College Reading/Writing Skills

  • Prerequisites: ICE 6 OR placement in ESL 3
  • Corequisite: ESL 1 & 4 & 7

This course will provide students with a foundation in reading and writing skills necessary to succeed in subsequent English, Liberal Arts, and Technical/Occupational courses. There are two components to this class: students will read authentic pieces of writing, written for native speakers of English, and will focus on vocabulary development and comprehension. Writing assignments based on the readings will also be done.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of ESL 3, the student will be able to:

  • Read and understand the novels used in this course.
  • Read and understand a variety of reading materials both in print and online.
  • Identify the main points and supporting details in various reading selections.
  • Report and evaluate the facts, ideas, and concepts presented in the readings.
  • Understand both the meaning and the word forms of the vocabulary in the vocabulary text.
  • Use paraphrases as an aid to comprehension.
  • Read for specific purposes.
