HAW 261 - Hawaiian Literature in English

  • Native speakers may not take language courses for credit.
  • Prerequisite: "C" or higher in ENG 100 OR placement in ENG 209-260

A literary and cultural experience of the indigenous Hawaiian culture through reading and analyzing selected major works in English translations.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of HAW 261, the student will be able to:

  • Appraise a variety of indigenous Hawaiian literary works ranging from folk tales, legends, myths and poetry
  • Conclude that the literature of the Hawaiians is as rich and varied as those in other civilizations and traditions
  • Study each selection as an example of the genre to which it belongs
  • Explain literary works as products of the social, historical, political and religious contexts of Hawaiian culture
  • Learn a variety of literary terms for literary analysis
  • Discuss universal themes and experiences that transcend cultural and time differences
  • Demonstrate confidence and competence in producing grammatically correct, well organized and thoughtful writing
