JPNS 201-202 - Intermediate Japanese I-II
Course Description
- Native speakers may not take language courses for credit.
- 201 Prerequisite: "C" or higher in JPNS 102
- 202 Prerequisite: "C" or higher in JPNS 201
Intermediate Japanese is a continuation of JPNS 102. Listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar. Daily independent (unsupervised) tape exercises required.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of JPNS 201, the student will be able to:
- Learn intermediate level of structural patterns, and put them into practical use.
- Further develop speaking and listening skills for common situations, such as making a business phone call, leaving a telephone message, eating and drinking at a restaurant, inviting a friend to dinner, and receiving and giving assistance in academic, business, and social environments.
- Develop the ability to read material written in the native script. Toward this end, the student will gain a working familiarity with a total of about 200 kanji.
- Become more acquainted with aspects of Japanese culture that relate to the lesson topics.
Upon successful completion of JPNS 202, the student will be able to:
- Develop increasing skills in listening and speaking in practical situations, e.g., telephone conversations on both social and business matters, and social (or business-related) outing to a restaurant and a party.
- Learn more advanced structural patterns and be able to use them in different situations.
- Read and write with average 80 percent accuracy using about 200 kanji.
- Learn more about Japanese culture particularly the aspects different from those of the US and other countries, and those directly pertaining to the lesson he/she is on.
