MATH 20 - Foundation Math

Course Description/Student Learning Outcomes

MATH 20B

  • Corequisite: MATH 20C & D

The function of this course is to equip students with the foundation in math and problem-solving skills that allows them to enter their Technical-Occupational and Liberal Arts programs. It also provides opportunity for students already enrolled in programs to strengthen ability in areas of need.

Upon successful completion of Math 20B, the student will be able to:

  • Common Fractions
    • Compare the sizes of simple fractions to determine their order.
    • Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions and improper fractions to mixed number.
    • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed numbers.
    • Solve application problems involving fractions and mixed numbers.
  • Decimals
    • Translate decimal numbers into words and vice versa.
    • Determine the comparative size of decimal numbers.
    • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimal numbers.
    • Round decimal numbers to a given place value.
    • Solve application problems involving decimal numbers.

MATH 20C

  • Corequisite: MATH 20B & D

The function of this course is to equip students with the foundation in math and problem-solving skills that allows them to enter their Technical-Occupational and Liberal Arts programs. It also provides opportunity for students already enrolled in programs to strengthen ability in areas of need.

Upon successful completion of Math 20C, the student will be able to:

  • Signed Numbers
    • Determine the relative value of signed numbers and plot them on a number line.
    • Find the absolute values of signed numbers.
    • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide signed numbers.
    • Simplify expressions using the appropriate order of operations.
    • Solve application problems involving signed numbers.
  • Calculator Skills
    • Enter real numbers into a scientific calculator.
    • Read the number displayed on a scientific calculator and determine its value.
    • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide real numbers using a scientific calculator.
    • Simplify expressions involving parentheses using a scientific calculator.
    • Compute the square root and powers of real numbers using a scientific calculator.
    • Store and recall values using the memory function of a scientific calculator.
    • Solve application problems using a scientific calculator.
  • Simple Algebraic Equations
    • Define the basic terminology of algebra.
    • Evaluate algebraic expressions.
    • Simplify algebraic expressions.
    • Solve basic algebraic equations.
    • Solve equations involving more than one variable term, variable terms on both sides of the equal sign, and grouping symbols.
    • Solve application problems using algebra.

MATH 20D

  • Corequisite: MATH 20B & C

The function of this course is to equip students with the foundation in math and problem-solving skills that allows them to enter their Technical-Occupational and Liberal Arts programs. It also provides opportunity for students already enrolled in programs to strengthen ability in areas of need.

Upon successful completion of Math 20D, the student will be able to:

  • Percent
    • Convert fractions and decimal numbers into percent numbers.
    • Solve the percent equation for the amount, base, or rate.
    • Compute mark-up and discount using percents.
    • Calculate simple interest.
    • Solve application problems involving percents.
  • Ratio & Proportion
    • Compute a specified ratio and simplify it.
    • Compare the values of ratios.
    • Write and solve proportions.
    • Solve application problems using ratios and proportions.

MATH 20E

  • Prerequisite: MATH 20B & C & D OR placement in MATH 24/50/53

The function of this course is to equip students with the foundation in math and problem-solving skills that allows them to enter their Technical-Occupational and Liberal Arts programs. It also provides opportunity for students already enrolled in programs to strengthen ability in areas of need.

MATH 20F

  • Prerequisite: MATH 20B & C & D OR placement in MATH 24/50/53

The function of this course is to equip students with the foundation in math and problem-solving skills that allows them to enter their Technical-Occupational and Liberal Arts programs. It also provides opportunity for students already enrolled in programs to strengthen ability in areas of need.

MATH 20G

  • Prerequisite: MATH 20B & C & D OR placement in MATH 24/50/53

The function of this course is to equip students with the foundation in math and problem-solving skills that allows them to enter their Technical-Occupational and Liberal Arts programs. It also provides opportunity for students already enrolled in programs to strengthen ability in areas of need.
