Marine Options Program
Look at what you will experience
As a student in MOP you will:
- Go on field-trips to interesting marine study sites
- Be eligible to apply for a two-week work shop on Quantitative Underwater Ecological Survey Techniques (QUEST)
- Participate in Student Symposia for presenting skill projects
- Receive "Seawords" - a student newsletter that consist of short articles about MOP and related marine activities
Each semester a special graduation ceremony is held to acknowledge student's achievements followed by the award of MOP Certificates. This certificate is equivalent to a minor in Marine Studies with the student's choice of focus.
What else is unique about this progressive program?
The multimedia classroom and well-equipped laboratory facility provide students with the best possible learning environment.
- Internet-ready computers and new microscopes create a challenging atmosphere for experiential learning
- Laboratory facility provides opportunity for students to conduct independent research projects
- Students have access to the latest tools in biometrics. Using motic scopes interfaced with computers generating digital imagery they can observe and measure organisms and objects
- HCC's Marine Education and Training Center provides adjunct training opportunities in practical maintenance and repair skills that are valuable to anyone involved in marine studies
Is the MOP Program right for you?
MOP is open to students in ALL fields of study. In order to meet the program requirements, students must complete:
- 3-4 ocean-related courses (see http://www.hawaii.edu/mop for course listings)
- A one credit seminar or laboratory course in Oceanography
- A 2 credit-based skill project of their choice and design (skill project can be from any marine-related fields)
Degrees that can be earned
- Certificate of Recognition (CR)
Estimate of Educational costs
- Admission to MOP is FREE.
- Courses taken for MOP requirements may also be used to satisfy General Education Course Requirements.
