CHEM 152L - Survey of Organic & Bioorganic Chemistry Laboratory

Course Description

  • Prerequisite: CHEM 151L or 171L
  • Prerequisite or Corequisite: CHEM 152

Techniques of preparation, purification, identification of organic compounds. May be taken on a CR/N basis.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of CHEM 152L, the student will be able to:

  • Measure mass using chemical balances
  • Measure liquid volume using graduated cylinders, pipets, and burets
  • Measure temperature using a thermometer
  • Observe physical properties of chemicals
  • Prepare solutions
  • Perform dilutions
  • Titrate samples using a buret
  • Perform and observe chemical reactions
  • Prepare tables and graphs of experimental data
  • Write laboratory reports in the scientific format
  • Construct molecular models of compounds and study geometries
  • Devise and test modifications of chemical reactions
  • Measure solution absorbance using a spectrometer
  • Purify reaction mixtures
  • Perform chromatographic separations of mixtures
  • Extract compounds from natural sources
