OCN 190 - World Aquaculture
Course Description
OCN 190 is designed to provide a general background in aquaculture methods and systems as practiced in different parts of the world. The course will examine the old and new systems of cultivation on a country by country and species by species basis. The course will provide information on scientific and economic aspects of aquaculture. A discussion on biology, lifehistory and nutrition of cultivated species is provided.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of OCN 190, the student will be able to:
- Learn about fish farming methods of the world
- Examine the importance of aquaculture as a potential way of increasing food production
- Learn about the biology, nutritional requirements of most commonly cultivated species
- Analyze some of the economic aspects of aquaculture industry
- Discuss the chemical and biological aspects of pond ecosystem to introduce tropho-dynamic relationships and chemical cycles.
- Examine permit requirements in aquaculture development
- Analyze effects of aquaculture on coastal waters
- Survey aquaculture methods and species in Hawaii
