GEOG 122 - Geography of Hawaii

Course Description

  • Recommended Prep: Placement in ENG 22 or higher

Examines Hawaii as a unique, special place. Physical geography (volcanoes, erosion, climate, water resources, natural hazards), cultural geography (pre-contact society, the monarchy, economic change, agriculture, tourism, energy, population, land use, transportation, and urbanization), and regional geography of each island will be presented.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of GEOG 122, the student will be able to:

  • Understand, appreciate, and explain how Hawaii's natural landscape was created, and how it has changed over time.
  • Analyze the natural Hawaiian landscape and explain how humans have altered and adapted to it.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the changes in islands' economic, political, and urban geography.
  • Understand and explain the unique differences and similarities of each island.
  • Know and demonstrate an understanding of where places are located in Hawaii on map quizzes.
  • Demonstrate understanding and mastery of all subject matter and concepts; analyze changes in the landscape over time; and explain these effects on social conditions on essay and objective quizzes and exams.
