SOC 251 - Introduction to Sociology of the Family
Course Description
- Prerequisite: ENG 22/60 OR placement in ENG 100
Family patterns, mate selection, parent-child interaction, socialization of roles, legal sanctions, and current trends in family organization and functions.
Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of SOC 251, the student will be able to:
- Understand and apply major social scientific theoretical perspectives
- Understand the array of family structures within our own society
- Understand the diversity of family structures across world cultures
- Develop mastery of basic sociological/family vocabulary
- Develop skills to calculate, understand, and apply basic social scientific statistics
- Write coherent, well organized sociological essays
- Conduct library and electronic research on family issues
- Develop, organize, and write sociological research papers with a critical focus that relies upon quantitative and qualitative data analysis and that applies sociological theory
- Better understand and address family issues in their own lives
