Course Description: Two-dimensional visualization and rendering of forms, spaces, and ideas through a variety of approaches and media. (3 credits)

Prerequisite: ENG 22/60 or placement in ENG 100

Course Objectives and Outcomes: At the end of the course the student should be able to:

• Demonstrate a skillful use of a variety of drawing materials and techniques.
  
  
• Use the basic elements of the visual arts (line, value, shape, texture, modeling, pattern, composition) to arrive at an illusion of space, image and form.
  
  
• Develop an awareness of the interaction of seeing, imagining, and drawing.
  
  
• Demonstrate hand-eye coordination.
  
  
• Demonstrate an ability to articulate a qualitative evaluation of one’s own and others’ work.

Assessment: Student work will be assessed on the basis of successful completion of a series of studio projects, and a final cumulative portfolio evaluation. Criteria of assessment are provided for individual studio assignments.

Methods of Instruction: Teaching and learning will take place through a series of structured studio and field assignments, lecture/demonstrations, and individual and group critiques in which student work is analyzed for its strengths and areas of recommended improvement.
