Course Description: Theory and practice of painting: basic material and technical procedures will be addressed. (3 credits)

Recommended Preparation: ENG 22/60 or placement in ENG 100.

Course Objectives and Outcomes: At the end of the course the student should be able to:

• Comprehend and apply to specific assignments the visual elements of line, shape, light and shadow, color, texture, space and motion, the design principles of balance, rhythm, dominance, contrast, variation and unity.
  
  
• Complete the creative problem-solving process from planning and discovery to implementation and evaluation.
  
  
• Demonstrate an understanding of painting materials, procedures and terminology.
  
  
• Demonstrate an understanding of the painting process from thumbnail sketches and canvas preparation to the completion of a painting.

Assessment: Student work will be assessed on the basis of a series of hands-on studio and field assignments designed to provide specific application of key concepts and technical issues. A final cumulative portfolio evaluation will also be included. Specific assessment criteria are provided for individual studio assignments.

Methods of instruction: Teaching and learning will take place through a series of structured studio and field assignments, lecture/demonstrations, and individual and group critiques in which student work is analyzed for its strengths and areas of recommended improvement.
