Why Liberal Arts?

There are a host of reasons why Honolulu Community College should be your first choice for Liberal Arts...

Teaching

At HCC the primary responsibility of the faculty is teaching. The college has a dedicated staff which is genuinely interested in your learning. Your learning is also enhanced by small class sizes which generally average about 25 students per class.

Qualified Faculty

The Liberal Arts faculty members at HCC are very well qualified in their academic disciplines:

  • 100% hold one or more Master's degrees
  • 50% hold Doctorate degrees
  • Several faculty have written textbooks in the subject areas they teach

Transferability

The Liberal Arts courses offered by HCC are fully articulated with U.H. Manoa. Depending on your career goals you can complete the requirements for junior standing in most majors. Students from the college transfer not only to U.H. Manoa, but to many other four year institutions both locally and on the mainland.

Flexibility

For working students, HCC offers a night schedule of Liberal Arts courses which allows you to complete your associate degree by only attending classes during the evenings. HCC also offers selected Liberal Arts courses on Saturdays and accelerated courses which can be completed in eight weeks.

HCC provides courses via the Internet and cable TV. The majority of course work can be completed in the convenience of your home, and at a time that works best for your busy schedule.

Proven Track Record

Students from HCC have won prestigious scholarships for further study including:

  • Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship
  • Truman Scholarships
  • University of Hawaii Presidential Scholarships
  • First Team/Academic All-American Scholarships

Value

The full time tuition at HCC ranks as one of the best values on Oahu. For the 2006-2007 academic year, the full-time tuition at HCC is less than one-third of the full-time tuition at U.H. Manoa and many times lower than at private institutions.

Research clearly demonstrates that HCC students who transfer to UH-Manoa and other four-year colleges/universities are well prepared for the challenges of their baccalaureate programs.

Learning Resources

The library at HCC has 58,500 volumes, and students at HCC can also access the University of Hawaii system libraries, the Bishop Museum, and other libraries in both the state and the nation.

All registered students at the college can activate a computer account which allows them free access to the internet, the World Wide Web, and an electronic mail connection with their teachers and other students.

College Skills Center

The college provides a college skill center for students who need extra help with their mathematics and English skills.

Counseling Services

HCC has both academic and career counselors to help you plan your coursework at HCC and to help you choose a career that works best for you.

Child Care

Child care services are available in our Infant/Toddler/Preschool located in on-campus laboratories.
